Your Black Belt Journey

The journey to a black belt is a long one, it may have set backs and extreme challenges. Not everyone will have the right characteristics to make it.

You will need dedication and resilience. Natural Talent only gets you so far, then as always, hard work is needed to get better.

Everyone’s journey is different, don’t ever compare yourself (or your Children) to others.

Everyone is on their own path, other people might train more often, they may have private lessons, they might practice at home, they might put more effort in?

The only true comparison is comparing yourself to what you were like last month. Have you practiced at home, did you genuinely put 100% effort in, then you will see the differences.

Some elements in Martial Arts, for example sparring, is quite difficult and daunting for some. This is where strong character and resilience are formed.

When the going gets tough and you may be doubting yourself (or your kids are becoming unsure ) its time to dig deep and remember why you wanted to train in martial arts at the start. Kids need encouragement and Adults need motivation.

Children quitting is most common about Green Belt, as Taekwondo is starting to become harder. Sometimes their natural ability has run out and the hard work required is not something they are used to. Don’t encourage a quitting attitude, its sticks for life.

In general in modern day society, people are used to getting things quickly, schools don’t have winners and losers, its the taking part that counts. Is this real life, is this a genuine reflection on how things work?

Please don’t give up, I hear so many people who come back to martial arts in later life and regret that they quit.
